Patchwork quilting is many things to many people, including you.

Whether novice beginner to professional… those of us that share a passion for patchwork and quilting have a desire to create beautiful quilted art.  Whether functional quilts that warm our beds, or abstract pieces of art that adorn the walls of our homes, we all bring our lives, our experiences, techniques and passion to this craft of patchwork quilting.

While I have grown very comfortable with my online name of MaggieB, which I have had almost as long as I have been quilting, most of you, if you do know me in the real world know me as Marge Burkell.

In the 30+ years that I have been involved in patchwork quilting I have come full circle.  I started out all those years ago wanting to make a quilt for the new baby on the way… that baby, my daughter Allison, will turn 30 years old this Saturday!  Just last year I went full circle, back to “basics” as I started a fun and wonderful quilt for my new baby granddaughter, Alexis!

PostHeaderIcon Patchwork Quilting EQ7 Soon to be Released!

Patchwork Quilting EQ7Some of you, and probably ALL of you returning from Paducah, have heard that the NEW EQ7, Electric Quilt, patchwork quilting software is to be released the beginning of JUNE!  But did they tell you that the Electric Quilt has LOTS of items especially for your older versions on SALE?

I actually have the original version around here somewhere!  Can you believe that?  It’s OLD!  LOL!  Not too many of us quilters even HAD computers back then!  I thought I was sooo savvy having software for patchwork quilting!  Imagine my embarrassment when I had to call Dean and explain I had FORMATTED the disk!  Yes, disk, because back then that’s all we had!

So if YOU have Electric Quilt software, and would love to have some add ons, think to check out Dean & Penny’s website!  No affiliation, as a matter of fact I have not been able to try out their software in years, but they are just wonderful people with a quality product.  Always has been.   So stop by their website, and its okay if you tell them MaggieB, from “Patchwork Quilting”, sent you!

But don’t just take MY opinion, EVERYONE knows how GREAT Electric Quilt is!

  • Electric Quilt 7 / Patchwork Times by Judy Laquidara – Most Electric Quilt users have heard that version 7 is soon to be released. This makes me very happy! I can’t wait to see the updates and changes they’ve made. For all the talk about companies who don’t treat us the way we’d like to be …

PostHeaderIcon Patchwork Quilting REVIEW:

I had one of my patchwork quilting students contact me today to ask my opinion of Jinny Beyer’s new book, “The Quilter’s Album of Patchwork Patterns:4050 Pieced Blocks for Quilters” and asked if it would worth adding to their patchwork quilting library.

Jinny Beyer is a master quilter who is highly respected within every quilting community, beginner to professional level, and a prolific and esteemed author.  Every one of her books is excellent and well worth adding to your quilting library.  They are all well written, easy to understand, and  made with good quality.

As a beginner my first quilt class was a sampler quilt block drafting series and one of the very first books I ever invested in was Jinny Beyer’s book, “The Quilter’s Album of Blocks and Borders”. I still own that book, it holds an honored position in my library and I still refer back to it.  It ‘only’ has 750 blocks within it as opposed to the new book which houses 4,050 patchwork quilting blocks!

Would I use this one? You BET!  Would YOU?  You will use it over many years if you are a quilter that intends to stay in & around patchwork quilting for any length of time.  You will use it if you are a quilter that likes to peruse for ideas and inspiration.  You will use it if you like to draft your own blocks in the size that best fits your project, not what a pattern tells you it has to be.  You will use it if you just love beautiful books that lead to beautiful patchwork quilting projects.  So if your are looking for a GREAT volume of very usable quilt knowledge be sure to add this one to YOUR quilt library today too!

PostHeaderIcon Patchwork Quilting Glow in the Dark Lip Quilt Labels?

Patchwork Quilting Glow in the Dark Lips

Glow in the dark lips?  For a patchwork quilting label?

Heh heh, okay not the traditional idea of a typical quilt label… but yes, one I have used for years.

Quilt labels are typically put on the back of one’s quilt, sewn to the back, and record:

  • NAME of the QUILT if applicable
  • Always the NAME of the quilt-maker
  • NAME of the QUILTER if different than the maker
  • DATE of the quilt’s completion and/or the dates when started and finished
  • Its also a good idea to record WHERE the quilt was made so that it can be cataloged correctly
  • you will find that some quilters also like to put traditional sayings on their labels; most taken out of historical text

PostHeaderIcon Liberate YOUR Patchwork Quilting!

Patchwork Quilting Liberated Quiltmaking III would like to give just a quick overview and review on Gwen Marston’s new book, “Liberated Quiltmaking II”which I was lucky enough to get my hands on this week…

I first met Gwen when she had just published [along with Joe Cunningham] her first three books and took patchwork quilting classes from the two of them.  I don’t recall what the subject of the other classes were but I do recall learning to draw feather quilting patterns without any templates.  I used that class, and her books often.
