Let’s take a look at paper piecing your patchwork quilting!
First off I when I talk of paper piecing your patchwork quilting I am referring to English Paper Piecing as opposed to foundation paper piecing. English paper piecing quilts is a construction technique of basting over a paper foundation to hold and support the fabric pieces while sewing them together. This is all done by hand so can be accomplished anywhere as you don’t need a sewing machine at all… which makes it a great project for all those places you end up sitting with nothing to do! Think, waiting for your daughter to finish her dance lesson, sitting on the train into the city, watching television with your family, sitting poolside… the places are endless! Each place makes it difficult to have a sewing machine with you!
HISTORY of Paper Piecing Your Patchwork Quilting
English paper piecing quilts date back to hexagon Grandmother Flower Garden quilts as old as the 1770’s. The oldest one made is the United States is believed to date to 1807. In this type of piecing an individual piece of paper is cut to the finished size of each and every patch in the quilt.
Many times these papers were not all removed from the quilt. Newspapers, handwritten letters, etc. were often used for the templates so they make it possible to analyze some of these older quilts and determine their age by the papers themselves!Imagine peeking through a coming apart seam and seeing letters from your great-great-great grandmother! That is exactly how a lot of dating has been done with these paper piecing quilts!
