Patchwork Quilting English Paper Pieced QuiltsTHANK YOU, all of YOU,  for Staying TUNED for  Patchwork Quilting now PRESENTS:  HOW TO Paper Piece Quilts!

Some common paper piecing quilts you find  throughout patchwork quilting are made of hexagons, as discussed, triangle, diamonds, and tumbler shaped patchwork quilting.  The beauty is that the entire quilt is made of just one shape, one size! You just cut out [or purchase already for using] that finished shape by however many you will use in your quilt.

Then its just a matter of putting one paper patch to the back of a piece of patchwork quilting fabric that is at least 1/4″ larger all the way around, holding it in place, and basting that seam allowance down:  Simply Click on the LINK BELOW for ALL the directions and diagrams!

Patchwork Quilting Paper Piecing QuiltsI like to use one of two ways to hold the paper template to the back of my fabric. The 1st way is to cut the templates out of wax backed freezer paper… and simple iron the paper onto the back of the patches ahead of time so I always have a supply ready to sew when I need them.

The other way I use to adhere the template to the fabric back is with the use of a wash out glue stick.  I always have one in my bag with my patches and supplies so that I can make up even more patches to sew whenever I run out of ones already made up and ready to go.

I usually use just plain old white or neutral basting thread to hold the seam allowance in place for two reasons.  First so that its easy to see to take it all out later, and secondly because it will not ever leave any die in the needle holes as it is removed.  THAT can and does happen, especially in humid climates, so beware!  REMEMBER this tip when basting your quilt layers together for quilting too!

Patchwork Quilting Paper PiecingOnce you have a number of your patches all made then you are ready to stitch those patches together.  You can simply use a whip stitch taking one stitch every 1/16th of an inch and only “biting” into the fabric as deep as needed to sew them together.  Be SURE to MATCH your thread as closely as you can to the color of your fabrics so it “disappears”.  An alternative is a ladder stitch but I only use that if it is something very sheer and dainty and I want to take all the extra time to accomplish it.

Next time we look into some paper pieced quilts and their templates…

In the meantime Brye Lynn has a great article on her blog too!  Give it a listen… YES!  a listen, as she has a podcast of it available for you too!    Notice that she shows, and talks about BOTH types of paper piecing quilts.  Thanks Brye Lynn!
